Pencils 101 is a foundational class that opens the door to the world of drawing. The exercises in this series of lessons will provide you with a solid start toward becoming a creative pencil artist. The lessons introduce the drawing process with a right-brained approach, learning to draw what you actually see, beginning perspective, and beginning shading. All students are strongly encouraged to complete the entire 10 lessons.

As a mixed media artist, there are often times I find a need for a specific
image for a piece I'm working on, but nothing in my ephemera pile fits the bill,
or more precisely, I prefer to include my own unique, personal image. However,
I've never had the drawing skills I so admired in others. I've tried to teach
myself over the years, but with little success. Then I came across Elizabeth's
Creative Pencils online course and I decided to give it a go. In just a few
short weeks, Elizabeth has taken me, a complete amateur, into a realm of drawing
that I can apply and use in my other artwork with ease and a feeling of
comfortable success. Her technique of teaching what one "sees" and applying
basic fundamental skills combined with individual expression is so refreshing.
Her critiques are always spot-on and encouraging, and help me grow as an artist.
I'm elated with my progress and that of my fellow students, and I look forward
to many more exciting lessons with Elizabeth.

Creative Pencils Student

Elizabeth Gyles Johnson has taught art and creativity to students of all ages since 1999.
Over the years her strongest emphasis has been on drawing. She has taught on-going classes in several cities in Oklahoma and workshops in both Oklahoma and Arkansas as well as online video classes to students from all over the globe.
Elizabeth is particularly sensitive to the questions and needs of the students. Her lessons are thorough, clear, and easy to understand. Rather than insisting everyone mimic her drawings, Elizabeth encourages each student to find their own sense of creativity and style.
Elizabeth uses a right-brained approach to teaching drawing. She has found this to be very effective as she has taught hundreds of students to draw using a wide variety of pencil types.
Elizabeth’s upbeat and affirming attitude is contagious among her students. Recently in a drawing class that she was teaching, a long time student told a beginning student,
